Star Anise Liqueur

I usually make homemade liqueur to give away to close friends at Christmas, with a wee bottle kept aside for ourselves.  This liqueur is quick, simple and delicious, which is why I revert to it again and again.  It’s golden hue, somewhat similar to a whisky or brandy, is another reason to love it.

I find a 375 ml bottle (aka mickey) is a good size for gift-giving.

In a container large enough to suit your intended volume (preferably with as little airspace as possible), add:

-Vodka (keep track of how many cups)
-One tablespoon crushed star anise for each cup of vodka (give it a quick whir in a coffee grinder, or go at it with a mortar and pestle)

Cover tightly, and allow to steep for two weeks.  At the end of the two weeks, strain through a coffee filter, and sweeten to taste using regular granulated sugar, stirring until dissolved.  I like one tablespoon per cup of vodka, which results in a fairly dry mixture.  If you like it sweeter, add the sugar by tablespoon, tasting after each addition.

Bottle, and you’re done!  Simple!
